Hot pepper compound could help hearts
ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? The food that inspires wariness is on course for inspiring even more wonder from a medical standpoint as scientists have reported the latest evidence that chili peppers are a heart-healthy food with potential to protect against the No. 1 cause of death in the developed world. The report was part of the 243rd National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), being held in San Diego the week of March 26.
The study focused on capsaicin and its fiery-hot relatives, a piquant family of substances termed "capsaicinoids." The stuff that gives cayennes, jalapenos, habaneros and other chili peppers their heat, capsaicin already has an established role in medicine in rub-on-the-skin creams to treat arthritis and certain forms of pain. Past research suggested that spicing food with chilies can lower blood pressure in people with that condition, reduce blood cholesterol and ease the tendency for dangerous blood clots to form.
"Our research has reinforced and expanded knowledge about how these substances in chilies work in improving heart health," said Zhen-Yu Chen, Ph.D., who presented the study. "We now have a clearer and more detailed portrait of their innermost effects on genes and other mechanisms that influence cholesterol and the health of blood vessels. It is among the first research to provide that information."
The team found, for instance, that capsaicin and a close chemical relative boost heart health in two ways. They lower cholesterol levels by reducing accumulation of cholesterol in the body and increasing its breakdown and excretion in the feces. They also block action of a gene that makes arteries contract, restricting the flow of blood to the heart and other organs. The blocking action allows more blood to flow through blood vessels.
"We concluded that capsaicinoids were beneficial in improving a range of factors related to heart and blood vessel health," said Chen, a professor of food and nutritional science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "But we certainly do not recommend that people start consuming chilies to an excess. A good diet is a matter of balance. And remember, chilies are no substitute for the prescription medications proven to be beneficial. They may be a nice supplement, however, for people who find the hot flavor pleasant."
Chen and his colleagues turned to hamsters for the study, animals that serve as stand-ins for humans in research that cannot be done in people. They gave the hamsters high-cholesterol diets, divided them into groups, and supplemented each group's food with either no capsaicinoids (the control group) or various amounts of capsaicinoids. The scientists then analyzed the effects.
In addition to reducing total cholesterol levels in the blood, capsaicinoids reduced levels of the so-called "bad" cholesterol (which deposits into blood vessels), but did not affect levels of so-called "good" cholesterol. The team found indications that capsaicinoids may reduce the size of deposits that already have formed in blood vessels, narrowing arteries in ways that can lead to heart attacks or strokes.
Capsaicinoids also blocked the activity of a gene that produces cyclooxygenase-2, a substance that makes the muscles around blood vessels constrict. By blocking it, muscles can relax and widen, allowing more blood to flow.

Bone telescopes from 18th century discovered
Five telescopes made of bone and dating to the 18th century have been discovered in Amsterdam, with two of the scopes found in the equivalent of toilets.
At the time, called the Enlightenment, the telescopes would have been considered luxury items and were likely used to gaze at objects on land or sea, rather than to look at the stars. They were created during a period when Amsterdam was a flourishing center for trade, one that attracted talented craftsmen.
Ranging in length from roughly 3 to 5 inches (80 to 140 millimeters), the telescopes were made using cattle metatarsal bone. "This particular bone of cow, the metatarsal bone, is actually quite straight and round," Marloes Rijkelijkhuizen, of the Amsterdam Archaeological Center at the University of Amsterdam, told LiveScience. "It's a nice shape to make these telescopes from, it's straight and (has a) very round narrow cavity."
Each telescope would have had a pair of lenses ? like the system used by Galileo ? a convex objective and a concave ocular, to magnify objects. (Two of the telescopes have at least one lens intact.) The longest of the telescopes, which had both lenses intact, is made of two parts put together with a screw thread, and was equipped with a bone insertion that has a small hole and likely functioned as an aperture stop.
With a magnification of about 3, the bone telescopes may have been used as opera glasses, held up by their wealthy owners to get a better view of the stage. Another idea is that someone going to sea, perhaps as a ship passenger, toted these with them.
The telescopes were excavated at different times over the past 40 years by the Office for Monuments and Archaeology in Amsterdam. Details of the findings hadn't been published until now, and, in the case of two of them, were unidentified until several years ago when Rijkelijkhuizen, then a master's degree student, started work on her thesis. She was looking at organic artifacts found in Amsterdam when she came across bone artifacts that would later turn out to be telescopes.

"At first I didn't recognize them either," Rijkelijkhuizen said. Her analysis of the five telescopes is now published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Archaeology in the Low Countries.
Found in a toilet
When Rijkelijkhuizen looked over the excavation reports she found that two of the telescopes had been discovered in cesspits ? the 18th-century equivalent of a toilet. It's not clear where the other three telescopes would have been originally deposited in the 18th century.
"It's a toilet but it is also like a dump for trash," she said. Why luxury items like these would have been put in toilets is a mystery; perhaps they broke and their owners, despite the cost of producing them, threw them away. Another idea is that their owners lost them.
Rijkelijkhuizen said it's not the first time she's uncovered unusual objects in pits like these. "We find all different kinds of objects in a cesspit, like false teeth, and we think, 'Why?'"
However it happened, it was fortunate for the archaeologists. "Because it was a toilet, and it's a very wet environment, all the objects in it are usually very well preserved," she said.
Ushering in the Enlightenment
The 18th century was a time of great change with new ideas, both scientific and political, being discussed. The telescope, with its ability to let people gaze at the stars, and see objects from a great distance, played a significant role in these changes. It had been invented only a century earlier. "The telescope (and later the microscope), were thus two major devices that helped usher in the Enlightenment," writes Geoff Andersen, an astronomer and author, in his book "The Telescope: Its History, Technology and Future" (Princeton University Press, 2007).
"Suddenly, anyone could experience things beyond the range of the unaided human senses, and start questioning conventional wisdom about the universe in which we live."
Although these newly discovered bone telescopes were not the most powerful telescopes of their day, for their owners it would have given them the ability to peer out farther into the horizon.

How do you bring ideas to life?
Our team is blessed with highly skilled developers. So we are able to give many of our ideas a try in small scale without developing them to full extend. That gives us the opportunity of real-life experiences to plan with instead of speculations.
What?s one trend that really excites you?
Well, of course it is crowd sourcing and co-creation! It is amazing how platforms and applications can support collaboration and the communication among distributed groups of people and bring forward innovative solutions. What was the worst job you ever had and what did you learn from it?
When I was a student I regularly worked as a freelance promoter. Through these experiences I learned the hard way how difficult it is to sell a product that does not always deliver. I also had a hard time with customers disliking the company or product you work for when they feel they do not receive sufficient value for their hard-earned money.
If you were to start again, what would you do differently?
We prided ourselves in growing the company without any external money and to have come to a point, where we could deliver a solid proof of concept. Today I would probably raise venture capital earlier when believing in an idea as strongly as was the case with unserAller. Why take it slow when you truly believe in the success of an idea?
As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?
Well, in my opinion success comes to a great part from execution of an idea. But anyway, a couple of years ago I was very intrigued by the idea of juice which is produced from single breed grapes as an alcohol-free alternative to wine, e.g. Chardonnay-juice. By now there are a couple of companies who offer exactly that in great quality. They even do the same for apple and other juices!
Had unserAller been there at the time I could have suggested this idea to juice-manufacturing companies and would have been rewarded for it? But, anyway, it?s great to see an idea come true!
What are your three favorite online tools and what do you love about them?
Dropbox: As almost everybody has mentioned Dropbox, I don?t think I have to explain.
Weheartit.com: The site and I have a love-hate relationship. It keeps me from doing useful things. But it does it so nicely!

(even though our team does have an unhealthy obsession with high quality coffee)
Who is your hero?
I look up to many entrepreneurial friends of mine, who are true role models for everything I do: Having built a successful company and at the same time keeping flourishing networks of friends. But the choice of a true ?hero? follows irrational paths. So I have trouble explaining, why mine is Lucky Luke J I always wanted to be him (yes, not LIKE him but actually live his life), when I was a child. Still kind of do ? riding into the sunset every day, having achieved my hero-cowboy-goals for the day and feeling satisfied and calm?

In Amsterdam I discovered the ?coffee verkeert?. First of all, I love the name! And then it also has the best mixing ratio between milk and coffee and is served in the most pretty glass? Everybody else would probably say, it?s a regular latte, but I always remember good times at the? Dutch ?gracht? (town canal), when I drink it.

Tire store shooting leaves 2 dead, 3 injured

Two people were killed and three injured Friday afternoon in a shooting at a North Carolina tire store, NBC17 of Durham reported.
The Durham County Sheriff's Office said a gunman described as a man with a tattoo on the left side of his face fired shots then fled the scene in a silver sedan, NBC17 reported.
A witness who knows the owner of the business told NBC17 that he saw the owner being transported in an ambulance with gunshot wounds. Deputies say the three people wounded in the shooting were taken to hospitals.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.

Foreign guarantors help plug emerging funding gap
LONDON (Reuters) - With refinancing becoming a giant headache for sovereign debtors across the globe, some struggling emerging economies are securing guarantees from richer nations or multilateral development banks to bolster their chances of selling bonds to wary investors.
The guarantee provides the emerging country borrower with access to otherwise-closed international capital markets, while the guarantor is extending financial support to a friendly trading partner at relatively low cost.
It's already being used in one Arab Spring country - Tunisia - and analysts say it could extend to others in the region, like Egypt.
Tunisia, which suffered several ratings downgrades in the past year following its Arab Spring uprising, last week said it was planning a U.S.-guaranteed dollar bond in the next few months.
And the tiny indebted nation of St Kitts & Nevis last week completed a debt exchange with new debt carrying a small guarantee from the Caribbean Development Bank.
The guarantees are particularly helpful in countries in the Middle East that have been through political and financial turmoil in the past year.
Setting a precedent for this type of guarantee, the United States underwrote a borrowing program for Israel 10 years ago to help the country out of economic difficulties.
"Over the medium term, we are going to see a series of funding gaps in the Middle East region - the guaranteeing of sovereign debt is going to be one way of resolving this," said Florence Eid, chief executive of research and advisory firm Arabia Monitor.
"It's a very good idea for countries in the region to get guarantees on their debt, from international economies like the United States that can afford it."
PLUGGING GAPS
Tunisia's finance ministry said last week the country could issue a U.S.-guaranteed bond totaling $400-500 million, its first international bond since 2007.
Plans for a conventional Eurobond last year were put on hold after the ousting of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
Tunisia's still boasts an investment grade rating, helped by a relatively contained budget deficit.
But at the lowest possible investment grade rating with negative outlook from all three major ratings agencies, the country is at risk of tipping into junk territory.
The guarantee, from the AAA/AA+ rated United States, is likely to boost the rating of the bond, investors say.
"Clearly, having debt issued with the sovereign risk of the United States is superior to having it issued with the sovereign risk of a country that has just undergone a revolution," said Daniel Broby, chief investment officer of fund manager Silk Invest.
"The guarantee will allow the issue to be priced more tightly."
A precedent was set in 2002 when Israel received a package of U.S. loan guarantees to help the economy deal with a recession caused by a global downturn and wave of Palestinian bombings.
Israel has issued $4.1 billion under the program and still has billions left to use. But it hasn't issued anything under the program for a number of years, since its own credit ratings have risen.
Investors speculate that countries such as Egypt, which has gone back to the drawing board to negotiate a loan from the International Monetary Fund, may follow suit in getting a U.S. guarantee on their debt.
"If Tunisia gets it, I suspect others will ask - Greece could do with such a guarantee right now as well," said Broby.
Greece successfully completed a debt exchange earlier this month after months of market anguish, but its new debt continues to trade at very weak levels.
LONG WAY
The beauty for the guarantor is that a little money can go a long way.
The U.S. State Department announced last month that it was making $30 million available for loan and bond guarantees to Tunisia.
Such a sum can go much further, analysts say, as the guarantee only needs to represent the probability of default.
So if investors place a 5 percent probability of Tunisia going into default, the country can easily borrow $600 million with only a $30 million guarantee.
In the case of St Kitt's, a small $12 million guarantee from the Caribbean Development Bank will ensure the country can pay interest payments on its debt, according to David Nagoski, director at White Oak Advisory, advisers on the deal.
"Creditors can take comfort from the fact that a multilateral institution other than the IMF has reviewed the overall program and feels sufficiently confident about future debt sustainability to provide support through a guarantee," Nagoski said.
The African Development Bank provided a similar guarantee when Seychelles restructured its debt in 2010.
The World Bank has also guaranteed emerging debt in the past, most notably Argentina.
Argentina defaulted on a World Bank-guaranteed $250 million bond in 2002 and has not yet been able to re-enter international capital markets, but investors in that bond were able to recoup their money via the guarantor.
But the danger for borrowers is that investors no longer trust their credit without the crutch of the high-grade guarantee. Too large a guarantee can reduce investor confidence in a borrower's ability to issue alone in future, analysts say.
Meanwhile, the danger for the guarantors is that they are increasingly forced to open their wallets, once such a precedent has been set.
"Giving such guarantees creates moral hazard. It may be seen as a cheap source of aid in the short run but it debases the sovereign status of the guarantor in the long run," said Broby.
"Imagine a world 10 years down the line, where the U.S. has guaranteed every restructured nation's bond."

The Government's Role in Managing Obesity ? Everyday Fitness

Three months ago I posted a discussion forum on our Diet Community entitled: ?Should government be involved in obesity prevention and treatment?? I was seeking input from WebMD members to incorporate in an upcoming debate on this subject. I teamed with former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, arguing that the government did have some valuable and effective roles in the prevention and management of obesity. The opposing view was represented by Fox TV?s John Stossel and author Paul Campos, both of whom felt the government was ineffective and therefore should not have a role in obesity. To all of the WebMD members who contributed a wide array of priceless comments and heartfelt thoughts, I want to extend a hearty ?thanks!? We heard you loud and clear and integrated your words into our dialogue throughout the event. I also encourage you to read the WebMD forum so that you can enjoy the comments from your fellow WebMD members.
The debate took place at NYU as part of the Intelligence Squared forums, eventually airing on PBS as well as NPR. ABC Nightline anchor John Donovan did a great job moderating the teams in front of a sold out audience of 800 New Yorkers, including an army of media. This is a hot topic, to say the least, as was evidenced by this fun interview I did with Slate entitled ?Twinkies are science fair projects?and other reasons why the government should play a role in America?s war on obesity?
All of us agreed that the government functions as an imperfect entity, as flawed as the humans who write the rules and strive to execute them. However, where our colleagues saw hopeless ineptitude, we saw predictable problems, but also potential and opportunities. So, what was the bottom line?
Most would agree that the government alone cannot solve the obesity crisis. A problem of this magnitude requires all sectors of society to bring our best thinking to the table. This is a collaborative effort connecting private and public entities to increase our chance for long term success.
WebMD members identified several key areas of opportunity for effective public and private roles. We added a few more to round it out.
1)?? Leadership: There are countless examples of places where leaders in society can inspire others to change. Let?s Move has helped raise awareness about childhood obesity and opened a national dialogue. When public officials, health care providers, and sports and entertainment celebrities are seen being physically active, they help inspire others. And there are rewards to be had. The President?s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition offers the President?s Active Lifestyle Award to individuals and families who commit to get more active.
2)?? Education: A full spectrum of government departments (e.g. DHHS, CDC, FDA, USDA) provide free information about healthy living. This education process needs to be carried right into the school classroom from kindergarten on up through high school. And it?s got to be fun and engaging to keep it memorable and important to kids and teens. Families together need to have better access to this kind of education so that whole communities can adopt healthier habits.
3)?? Protection: Scams abound and it falls upon the government to identify harmful and illegal activities as they relate to purported weight loss supplements, food products, and equipment. Food labels have to be exact and precise, detailing ingredients and macronutrient breakdowns.
4)?? Providing Options/Opportunities: There are many government sponsored programs that offer communities opportunities to improve nutrition. The school nutrition program is one example. If a school district accepts the offer and the government finances, they must abide by the stated rules: more veggies, lean protein, and fruits for kids.
5)?? Physical Infrastructure: If there?s no sidewalk, it?s a challenge to walk. If there?s no park, there?s no play. The same holds true for biking, walking, and hiking paths. Only the government can provide these invaluable gifts to any community. Public and private groups can work together to establish garden plots throughout a town or city to foster locovore farming and emphasize whole foods.
6)?? Public Private Partnerships: New York City is a model for these P-P Partnerships, including the FRESH (Food Retail expansion to Support Health) program, in which 14 new supermarkets were opened to increase access to healthy foods throughout inner city locations. Working to support the White House initiative to inform consumers, the beverage industry launched the Clear on Calories campaign providing beverage calories on the front of each product.
Clearly the public and private groups have ongoing activities in each of these sectors. Our point was that we need to keep pushing these them to do a better job where they can, and to continue to expand their efforts.
At the end of the day, the best strategy is a collaborative one and, happily, everyone agreed on that! We didn?t solve the problem, but we had a heck of a great time debating it!

MEGA Millions lottery jackpot hits $241 million

Nobody won the California Lottery's MEGA Millions jackpot on Friday, so Tuesday's jackpot grows to $241 million.
Three MEGA Millions tickets sold in California matched five out of six numbers in Friday night?s draw and are worth $326,163 each.
The tickets were sold in Santa Ysabel, Nipomo and Los Angeles.

In 2005, the first year California joined MEGA Millions, one ticket hit and a lucky Golden State resident won more than $300 million.
The tickets matched the numbers 43, 51, 53, 29, and 28, missing only the Mega number of 7.
Winners have 180 days from the date of the draw to claim prizes.
MEGA Millions is a multistate game, played in California and 43 other jurisdictions (41 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
